Grand Teton to Petroglyphs Tour

Combine our 4-hour Grand Teton Tour with a visit to an ancient art gallery, where Mountain Shoshone pecked some of the most surreal indigenous images you will see into sandstone boulders and cliffs. These are not the renderings or animals they ate, but entities that are part-bird, part-human, water ghosts and ghosts with rocky skin, that the artist encountered on a Vision Quest.

Fans of the series “Yellowstone” will be familiar with the vision quest Kayce Dutton went on in Season 4. That was based a Lakota tradition called Hanbleceya, but Vision Questing was common in Plains and Western Native American Cultures. The Mountain Shoshone tradition was called Puhawilo, “Sitting with Medicine Rocks”. It shared similar elements of puriifying, fasting, and waiting alone at a sacred spot for the spirits to visit. The petroglyphs we visit are portraits of those spirits.

On this tour you will see the best of Wyoming, doing a wildlife safari through Grand Teton National Park before crossing the Continental Divide and descending to Dubois, (pronounced Do-Boys) and the beautiful Whiskey Basin Wildlife Management Area. This area is rich in Shoshone history with hand-pecked petroglyphs scattered throughout the valley.

This full day (10-hour) adventure is a fantastic way to get a taste of “real” Wyoming during your visit to Jackson Hole. The town of Dubois is an old mining town which still has all the charm of Wyoming 100 years ago, but with better restaurants. We will eat at one of them.
